Wine and Food
|
The Californian climate is perfect for growing grapes and is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with close to 100 grape varieties grown in areas with dozens of different microclimates and soil types. Paso Robles on the central coast is evolving into one of the most exciting wine making regions in California. Winemakers here are experimenting with different varieties of grapes and different blends to create world class wines.
California also has the perfect combination of climate and natural resources to produce food on a massive scale - lettuce, asparagus, broccoli, dates, strawberries and numerous other crops, but when Laurence Hauben arrived in the 1980s she wasn’t impressed by the diet of the average Californian. She is a leader in California’s Slow Food Movement and runs ‘Market Forays’ from her home in Santa Barbara which teach people how to shop for food!
